Right tool for the right job
All my cooking endeavors, certainly those in the past year, have been noble attempts but yet I felt I was missing something essential. I'd watch the shows on TV and then make them dutifully using the recipes as supplied but still, I was left with a, "this could be better?" feeling.
Enter the Rachael Ray 5-quart Oval Saute pan. I know that everyone who cooks needs their own correct pans and skillets for whatever they do and I'm enough of a worrier that I'm particularly high strung if I'm using a pan that might not be the right one. I also know that most people who cook have too much cookware they never use, me included. But I've watched RR enough to know that she can just about do anything in this oval pan and now that I found one, I'm gettin' it.
It isn't right to be this excited about a pan. Not at all.

Heh heh. You wrote "tool."
Holy crap, sauce freaks, $99.99?
Congrats on the right pan.
I've been spending too much time lately thinking about a zester. I have a grater, sure, but it seems so non-specific and everything lately seems to call for lemon or orange zest. I mean the recipes I'm reading. I'm not actually cooking/baking anything.
Michael,
Go for the Microplane (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=11897363&RN=211&KSKU=100984)
Aunt Pam! That's cheap for all the cooking pleasure it's going to bring me. I want the pan! I want the pan! I want the pan!
$99.99 will be money well spent just so long as the pan doesn't prattle on aimlessly and often nonsensically like its namesake.
Oh, and thanks for the (zester) tip. I have to get that. And it's not Bed or Bath so that means I get to go to Beyond. Yay!
I don't think that's unreasonable. I'm currently in the market for a similar size saute pan with lid, myself, but I have to question the oval-ness of it all. Oval. Something about that seems foreign...Canadian, even.
Wouldn't that limit the surface cooking area of the pan? I mean, pancakes need room to spread out and be fluffy.
(These are serious concerns, people. I have given this ALOT of thought.)
BTW- on my list of late night purchases from infomercials- Batter Pro.
I LOVE it. It works like they say it does (a miracle!) and I make far less mess now flinging bread crumbs around the kitchen than I did the old way. For those who love things dipped, rolled, patted and crunchy, it's a must have.
On the other side of the spectrum:
The Eggstractor.
Steer clear, matey. Steer clear.
Marianne,
The ovalness of it is unusual but Rachael Ray makes use of this by being able to move food off to the side of the pan so it's not getting direct heat while she's working on something else. I don't have the dexterity or confidence yet to do this but I'm working on it.
All I can say is it looks good on TV and it makes you feel powerful when you're holding it. I'm looking forward to using it over the holiday for something.
